Works near completion on a recording studio for a musician in Bath. McCarey Simmonds are responsible for the design and detailing of the superstructure and substructure along with the sub-surface drainage, assisted by drainage specialists gta Civils. The structure comprises of a sedum flat roof supported on a framework of Glulam timbers. The timber, finished to a very high specification is supplied by specialists Cowley Timberwork. The external walls are constructed in Bouyer Leroux BioBric’s, which have very high energy efficiency and acoustic properties. The outer skin is of locally sourced Somerset stone.

The building, which has been designed to a very high standard by Architects WCEC,  has been sunk into the ground to limit it’s impact on the surrounding countryside. The large inclined vertical glazing within the main recording studio space gives fantastic views across the spectacular North Somerset countryside.

August 2008 saw a milestone reached with the formal handing over of keys by Graham Construction to the new Maddiston Primary School in Falkirk, Scotland.

The event took on special significance given that nine months before the ‘almost completed’ school was partially destroyed by fire.

McCarey Simmonds were responsible for the structural engineering design of the superstructure of this two-storey timber framed primary school (5,108m2) which was constructed on a greenfield site.

The two storey school stands as a model of sustainable construction having been built using a host of notable sustainability techniques. All timber in the project, including the substantial timber framing is from 100% Sustainably Certified Timber sources under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) scheme. The block work used is a recycled Enviroblock, the walls are treated with recycled newspaper insulation and the playground surface is made from 100% recycled tyre rubber.

The sedum grass ‘green roof’ provides green ecological space and acts as a natural water retainer, thus minimising the risk of flooding. This blends effortlessly with local stone which was used for the façade with traditional Lime mortar.

Works are almost complete at Queen’s Court on Gary Monaghan’s five storey, 20 flat housing development for Download Housing Association, engineered by McCarey Simmonds. The project was architecturally designed and project managed by construction management specialists, Focus Consulting of Brighton.

McCarey Simmonds are responsible for the superstructure and foundation design with Focus Consulting responsible for the architecture and project management of this five storey timber framed residential block. The structure is built into a sloping site requiring the instalation of bored piled and king post cantilever retaining wall.

The bar/restaurant will have seating for 300 people and the 2,500 sq ft roof terrace, which is being designed by Diarmuid Gavin, will be a key feature of the development.

The open glazed structure is formed in steelwork with precast concrete floors. The basement retaining wall structure, including indoor pool, are formed in Caltite waterproof concrete. An interesting feature is the glazed roof top bedroom pod that cantilevers dramatically over the front and rear of the building. The pod gives access to a roof top garden along with spectacular views across Brighton.

Chandlers of Brighton sees it’s new Mini showroom open for business in Victoria Road. McCarey Simmonds were responsible for the superstructure structural engineering design, substructure and drainage design.

This November, Cross Street South, the Midland’s first Eco community in Wolverhampton, won the Sustainable Housing Award for ‘Sustainable larger social housing project of the year’ at a ceremony hosted by impressionist, comedian, and committed environmental campaigner, Alistair McGowan, at London’s Hilton Hotel.

This ground breaking development, the superstructure structural engineering which was designed by McCarey Simmonds, provides 27 eco-friendly flats and 3 houses that uses up to 50% less energy than standard homes, only needing 2 kilowatts of heat as opposed to the usual 8 to 10. It also uses a range of low maintenance materials such as cedar cladding and recycled wood in its kitchen units. The grass roof provides good insulation and keeps the homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Other eco friendly aspects include a community recycled wood chip boiler, which provides all of the heating and hot water for the homes, low energy lighting, composting, recycling bins, water butts and high performance softwood and double-glazing.

We start work this month on the superstructure design and detailing of Cross Street South, Wolverhampton on behalf of Integer and, our client, OFP Timber Engineering.

The scheme consists of 30 dwellings, combining two-bedroom apartments and terrace housing and incorporates a communal landscaped environmental park, allotments, recycling facilities and environmental pavilion.

All dwellings will comply with “Lifetimes Homes” objectives and meet “Eco-homes – Excellent” standards. The project will incorporate modern methods of construction and will aim to provide future flexibility, reduced energy and water consumption and use sustainable materials. Sedum alpine roofs will also be used on the scheme.
