{"id":13,"date":"2012-12-04T20:09:49","date_gmt":"2012-12-04T20:09:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mccareysimmonds.co.uk\/data\/?p=13"},"modified":"2025-10-17T12:48:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T12:48:24","slug":"maddiston-primary-school-falkirk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mccareysimmonds.co.uk\/data\/maddiston-primary-school-falkirk\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustainable school construction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Educational. \u00a39 million.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>August 2008 saw a milestone reached with the formal handing over of keys by Graham Construction to the new primary school in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Maddiston Primary School\" src=\"https:\/\/mccareysimmonds.co.uk\/images\/maddiston\/maddiston1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The event took on special significance given that nine months before the \u2018almost completed\u2019 school was partially destroyed by fire.<\/p>\n<p>McCarey Simmonds were responsible for the structural engineering design of the superstructure of this two-storey timber framed primary school (5,108m2) which was constructed on a greenfield site.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Maddiston Primary School Glulam balconies\" src=\"https:\/\/mccareysimmonds.co.uk\/images\/maddiston\/maddiston3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The two storey school stands as a model of sustainable construction having been built using a host of notable sustainability techniques. All timber in the project, including the substantial timber framing is from 100% Sustainably Certified Timber sources under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) scheme. The block work used is a recycled Enviroblock, the walls are treated with recycled newspaper insulation and the playground surface is made from 100% recycled tyre rubber.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Maddiston Primary School sedum roof\" src=\"https:\/\/mccareysimmonds.co.uk\/images\/maddiston\/maddiston4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sedum grass \u2018green roof\u2019 provides green ecological space and acts as a natural water retainer, thus minimising the risk of flooding. This blends effortlessly with local stone which was used for the fa\u00e7ade with traditional Lime mortar.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Maddiston Primary School Glulam framed hall\" src=\"https:\/\/mccareysimmonds.co.uk\/images\/maddiston\/maddiston6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Educational. \u00a39 million.
